Growing Conditions and Care of Plants

Growing-ConditionsDescriptions of plants are accurate for my growing conditions. Please be aware that plants will take time to mature – give them at least 1 to 2 years to get themselves established, (shrubs and climbers within 3 + years), they will then grow to their full potential – height and spread varies on soil type, and position in garden – sun, shade moist, dry stony soil, etc. Orders will normally be dispatched within a week, but may take up to 2 or 3 (depends if a plants not rooted enough – then either won’t send or will delete from order and send package quicker if required). Please unpack plants as soon as you receive them and put them outside and keep well watered until ready to plant – all these plants are hardy and won’t appreciate mollycoddling! If you won’t be planting for a while it may be worth your while potting on into a larger pot to get a bigger root system! When it comes time to plant – you’ll benefit from this, especially if you plant in Autumn, your plants will be at least twice the size they would be if you left your plant buying till spring, as the ground is a lot colder and the plants take longer to grow! The general exception to this is people with heavy, waterlogged clay soil, Spring time is normally a better planting time as the plant will benefit from the warmer/drier conditions and make a larger root system before winter comes along which will help it to survive! I have heavy clay soil and instead of digging matter into it – too much like hard work – I raise my beds with bought in top soil and my home made compost – then use 6″ edging boards, stone and log roll in different areas and they all work fine! (I’ve found I don’t need any more than 4 to 6 inches of soil (my first beds were 12″ deep)!

Queries

I’ve tried to cover as much ground as possible re planting – if you have a query regarding your ordered plants, please contact me and I’ll try to help if possible. If you are in anyway unhappy with the plants or there is damage to the packaging, please advise immediately.

Planting out

Please also bear in mind that plants will generally be trimmed back for transporting and generally dying back later on in year – this of course doesn’t stop you planting, as it’s the root system that’s the main thing and I always do a lot of planting in Autumn as it reaps the benefits the following year! (Plus of course I’m generally too busy to get into my garden in the Summer!!)
